Abstract | The Bologna process was initiated to create a more uniform system of higher education in Europe. As far as Germany is concerned, the new BA programmes have introduced substantial changes, in particular a new emphasis on the training of key skills and the introduction of study courses taught through the medium of English. As a consequence, the learning and teaching of language and communication are of much greater significance and must become an integral part of university education. University language centres should seize this opportunity and meet the challenge by designing new programmes and curricula for content-oriented language learning in co-operation with other university institutes and faculties. The article reports on the experience of integrated language learning and teaching at the Viadrina European University in Frankfurt (Oder), an international university where language learning is an obligatory element in study courses for law, business and economics, as well as culture. The German certification system UNIcert®, designed and developed by the German Association of University Language Centres AKS e.V., has proven to be an appropriate framework for bringing content and language learning together. In conclusion, the article calls for a close co-operation between didactic research and teaching practice in the area of foreign language education at university level. (Verlag, adapt.). |
