| Abstract | The role of the university as the basis for a common European culture is the topic of [this] article. Taking the establishment of the University of Alcala in 1499 as his point of departure, [the author] shows that the university was deeply influenced by a culturally rich world dominated by European humanism and international contacts and exchanges. The emphasis on languages - mostly classical - was also an emphasis on access both to information that was not available in Spanish or Latin - and to an important part of the European cultural heritage: the classical authors that were being rediscovered in this age. He insists on the importance of books as the principal instrument of communication in universities, ... they are an important part and source of the cultural heritage of universities. (DIPF/orig.). |
