| Abstract | The author states that citizens largely must accept the rhetoric advocating school choice on faith, "for little substantive evidence exists regarding the effects oc current school choice proposals. ... Fortunately, success and failures of the past can be used to inform contemporary decision making. The case of late 19th-century ' community schools' in Texas offers such an opportunity." These schools, created after the Civil War "exhibited several characteristics that correspond to school-choice plans discussed today." The article describes rise and decline of these schools and illustrates how this example can impact the current debates; especially funding and parent decision making are desribed as critical issues.
