| Abstract | In the educational reform promoted during the 1980s, the links between education policy and political change are far more readable than the links to socio-economic change. The attempt to implement educational democratization, modernization and redefinition of school knowledge, though not always successful, reflects the transition in the political culture of the period. At the same time, continuities regarding the structural and cultural characteristics of the Greek policy, such as clientelism, ideologies of nationalism and sovereignity crisis tend to set the limits of transition. The point that educational reforms in Greece have failed to contribute to socio-economic development is placed within the same context, thus emphasizing the discontinuities between the political, economic and cultural spheres in Greek society.
