| Abstract | The book is divided into two chapters, which contain articles on the subject of international comparisons in mathematik education from a broad perspective. It considers the merit of comparative studies, and the changes they offer for a better understanding of one's own educational system - both its strengths and its weaknesses - in an attempt to identify possible approaches to improved education. The book also develops a basis for the critical discussion of comparative studies in mathematics education. The limitations of such studies and the underlying assumptions and simplifications are discussed, as well as the uncritical usage of ranking lists, to which the results of highly complex studies are often reduced.
