Abstract	The informations gathered in this volume are intended to complement the data of the TIMSS. "An ethnographic case study was used to investigate four major topics" regarded of key interest to U. S. policy makers and to provide "supplementary contextual information necessary ... to assess and interprete the quantitative data collected through the TIMSS". The four topics are: "national standards in education, teachers' preparation and working lives, the role of school in adolescents' lives, and how students' differences in ability are managed by the school system".
