Abstract	The aim of this chapter is to place the concept of European citizenship into a wider theoretical framework. This enables us to give the concept a clearer definition than the one generally used in every day language and in the media. This clarification of the concept is a necessary starting-point for any thinking of a pedagogical nature, where the aim is to develop in pupils a sense of European citizenship. This part of the chapter 1 is devoted to clarifying the main terms which are usually associated with reflection on European citizenship, that is, concepts of State, nation, people, country, constitution and, obviously, citizenship itself. The work of clarification is based on the elucidation of points which throw light one upon another, and it draws on a variety of theoretical fields. Among these, historical analysis and legal and sociological approaches occupy a very important place. (DIPF/orig.).
