| Abstract | The document gives an overview of the present state of affairs in education in the Republic of Latvia. The main aims are reviewed in the context with tasks concerning the transition process of the society on the whole (consolidation of a sovereign state, support of democracy, market economy etc.). The Law of Education was adopted in 1991. It defines the main principles, goals and features of the education system in Latvia, such as the right of education guaranteed by the state and the local municipalities. One of the most essential problems regarding the implementation of the education reform is the shortage of funds for education. The Citizenship Act (1995) defines the command of the Latvian language as requirement for naturalization of non-citizens. Therefore the schools have to make the acquisition of Latvian language accessible for the large number of non- citizens. (DIPF/St.). |
