Abstract	While some may argue that the introduction on an increasing scale of new systems and resources for distance learning and for telecommunications may reduce the need for professional mobility, such systems can never replace totally the benefits of seeing at first hand and making personal contacts. Working within the EU at the professional level will require an increased ability to understand the European perspective and to pursue a career which may require taking up assignments or appointments in different member states. Preparation for a successful career on a multinational basis requires a personal programme of lifelong learning and development. The importance of professional mobility in such a programme cannot be underestimated whether as part of a student course, an academic career in higher education or an industrial career.
