Abstract | The authors suggest that dropping out by high school students in the Montreal area be considered in terms of the differential socialization of the sexes. This perspective is useful in analyzing various often paradoxical findings: girls, who are disadvantaged by the effects of gender, do better in school and drop out less often than boys, but their better school performance gives them no advantage in finding work and becoming integrated into society. Analysis shows that the decision to drop out occurs at one moment in a trajectory, depending as much on what precedes the event as on its expected consequences. (DIPF/orig.) |
