Abstract	The paper is concerned with the theoretical foundations of second language acquisition with Multimedia, with a focus on text comprehension. After describing the cognitive processes involved in text comprehension, theories of Multimedia learning and their application to second language acquisition are discussed, namely the Dual Coding Theory, the Cognitive Load Theory and the Generative Theory of Multimedia Learning. To illustrate these theories, the results of related empirical research studies are provided. In addition, some moderating effects of individual differences on learning with Multimedia are discussed. On the basis of these theoretical considerations, a cognitive approach to learning with Multimedia is proposed, which focuses on text comprehension. In this approach, the function of Multimedia elements in an instructional software is defined based on the support they provide for the cognitive processes of the learner. The paper concludes with a description of potential benefits of Multimedia software for second language acquisition which are derived from the theories discussed. (Verlag).
