Abstract | Media competence should be viewed as a common task, a responsibility, and a duty for politics, economics, education and actors of the technical sphere and other parts of our society. The European Centre for Media Competence (ECMC) was founded to help solve this difficult task in the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia with a clear perspective towards the whole of Germany and the European sphere. As an interfacial organisation it is set up in the form of a public-private partnership. ECMC is supported in these efforts by both public enterprises and private companies ... . ECMC has set up in North-Rhine Westphalia a rapidly-expanding network of local Call Center Academies. People attending intensive courses in these academies can acquire a widely accepted certificate. The partner organizations collaborating with ECMC are recognized educational establishments, IHKs (chambers of industry and commerce) and Call Center operators but also actors of the cultural or the political sphere.
