| Abstract | In the first part Jacobs' explication of i-topicalization in LB 168 is discussed. It is the aim to show, first, that his theory cannot account for some very crucial data, second, that the theory itself is stipulative and afflicted with some shortcomings. It is compared with Hungarian in order to show that i-topicalization is not a language specific phenomenon in Germany. In the second part the authors develop their own theory which is modular in character. It is argued that i-topicalization results from the interaction between focus structure, syntax, semantics and co/context and is an information structure phenomenon. I-topics constitute a relevant subset of topics, namely, of those topics showing a specific i-contour. This subset divides in further subsets, one of which is the i-topic identified by Jacobs. Even non-topics, however, may carry an i-contour, then with a different effect, of course. (Verlag). |
