| Abstract | New educational technologies are developed to enrich the teaching and learning of science and technology. Schools and teachers should be provided with the necessary funding to buy these technologies, and teacher training programmes should teach them how to determine what equipment to buy for what purpose. Here we should have learnt from the past: when computers were introduced as a new teaching tool, schools started filling up special classrooms with the new machinery without having any idea of what to do with it. It was left entirely to the individual interest of some teachers to use it for riding their hobby horses. Gradually the situation improved and this was largely due to the fact that in-service programmes were set up to give teachers a better insight into the advantages these new tools offered, and the limitations that had to be kept in mind when planning their use.
