Abstract	This essay looks at the past, present and future of research on higher education. It adopts an international perspective and seeks to help the reader understand the complex web of the research field. The author considers the reasons for the scarcity of data and analysis, e. g. the widespread custom to publish research results in "gray literature" or keeping them "confidential". The expansion and growth of a higher education research infrastructure are dealt with as well as the information infrastructure in higher education, especially information sources such as "state of the art" compilations, encyclopedias, specialized periodicals and databases. Also the history and geographical spread of the field are looked at. Future trends are suggested and needs that have to be addressed if the field is to develop further are listed. (DIPF/orig.).
