Abstract	Inspection in its present form in England and Wales, under the auspices of the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED), was set up by the 1992 Education (Schools) Act and added to in subsequent Acts with the first inspection beginning, for secondary schools, in September 1993. Prior to that, inspection was carried out on a more or less random basis by Her Majesty's Inspectors (HMI) and by Local Education Authority (LEA) advisers/inspectors. The 1992 Act set up a system whereby all schools would be inspected once every 4 years against predetermined criteria, the results of those inspections would be made public and the school would be required to draw up action plan to address the issues raised in the report.... This paper explores the extent to which OFSTED inspections result in improvement. It reports on research which took the form of a questionnaire survey of 821 teachers in 35 secondary schools in England which had experienced a full inspection. It examines if, why and how different categories of teachers intend to revise their professional practice as a result of the findings of an inspection. (DIPF/Text u. Abstract übernommen).
