Abstract | Excellent teaching. Clearly a worthy goal for lecturers and their institutions to strive for. But when, where and how does it emerge? What will facilitate it, what will impede it? In other words, what are the principles, structures, and requirements of excellent teaching? In different articles, written by academic actors ranging from deans and chancellors to young lecturers, this book addresses these questions from four different perspectives: governance (with a focus on supportive university structures), higher-education research (with a focus on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning movement), hands-on (with concrete teaching examples from different German universities and one Chinese university) and visibility (with a focus on teaching award winning lectures). The book's intended audience includes both lecturers wishing to reflect and improve on their own teaching, as well as decision makers wishing to reflect and improve on the structures that support excellent teaching at their institutions. - INHALT: Preface from the Series Editors (7). - Till Tantau & Bettina Jansen-Schulz: Introduction (9). - Part 1: Structures and Requirements of Excellent Teaching - the Governance Perspective (19). - Bettina Jansen-Schulz: Principles, Structures and Requirements for Good Teaching (21). - Bettina Jansen-Schulz & Sandra Magens: Advancing Excellent Teaching through Academic Governance and Human Resource Development (37). - Jonathan Kohlrausch: Gender and Diversity of Students - An Introduction (53). - Juliana Wiechert: Consultation for Students in Crisis Situations (65). - Part 2: Research on Teaching and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning - the Higher Education Research Perspective (73). - Tobias Schmohl: Inquiry-Based Self-Reflections: Towards a New Way of Looking at the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning within German Higher Education (75). - Tobias Schmohl & Bettina Jansen-Schulz: Joining Institutional Policy with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (91). - Amir Madany Mamlouk, Christina Geick & Katrin Lämmermann: From Zero to Hero - New Methods for Motivating Students (99). - Tim Kunold & Till Tantau: Discovering and Fixing Misconceptions Using Just-in-Time Exercises (111). - Maria Noftz & Annette C.
