| Abstract | Seit Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts symbolisierten die protestantischen Missionen wie die London Missionary Society und katholische Missionen, insbesondere die der Jesuiten-Kongregation in Madagaskar, die Konfrontation der beiden großen europäischen Mächte, Großbritannien und Frankreich, in ihrem Bestreben um Eroberung des Indischen Ozeans. Der Übergang zur französischen Kolonialherrschaft im Jahre 1896 führte dazu, dass die französische protestantische Mission auch die anglikanischen Stationen übernahm. Die Untersuchung verdeutlicht die Instrumentalisierung des Sports durch religiöse Gruppierungen zu dieser Zeit. Im Bewusstsein der Grenzen der Kolonisation versuchten sie seit den 1930er Jahren, die Jugend für sich zu gewinnen, um sie näher an die Kirche heranzuführen und eine neue Generation zu erziehen. Since the beginning of the 19th century, the Protestant Christian missions, such as the London Missionary Society and Catholic missions (in particular those of the Jesuit congregation), have symbolised the confrontation between the two great European powers, Britain and France, in their effort to conquer the Indian Ocean. The advent of French colonisation in 1896 led the French Protestant mission to take over the Anglican missions. However, the study clearly shows that the spiritual and educational debates between the missions were the driving forces behind social and political life in Madagascar throughout the colonial period. This article illuminates the use of sports by religious groups during this time. Becoming aware of the limits of colonialisation as early as in the 1930s, these religious groups attracted young people, bringing them closer to the church and training a new generation. Verf.-Referat. Implantées à Madagascar depuis le début du XIXème siècle, les missions chrétiennes protestantes telles que la L.M.S. (London Missionnary Society) et catholiques (notamment la congrégation jésuite) symbolisent l'affrontement des deux grandes puissances européennes, Angleterre et France dans leur conquête de l'océan Indien. Avec l'avènement de la colonisation française en 1896, la mission protestante française prend le relais des missions anglicanes et le Général Gallieni encourage clairement les missions catholiques. Pour autant, les débats spirituels et éducatifs entre missions constituent le fil conducteur de la vie sociale et politique à Madagascar pendant toute la période coloniale, voire au-delà. Notre communication souhaite mettre en lumière l'instrumentalisation des sports par les congrégations religieuses. Animées d'une permanente rivalité, conscientes des limites de la colonisation dès les années trente, elles entendent capter les jeunes, les rapprocher de l'église et former une nouvelle génération apte à prendre en main les rênes du pouvoir.
