| Abstract | The process of accreditation in higher education, which is the primary gatekeeper of federal financial aid dollars, is overdue for reform. The Trump administration has committed to using accreditation reform to overhaul the system of accountability for college and universities. An executive order in April 2025 indicated that among other changes, the Department of Education would begin considering new accreditors to join the ranks of the existing set of gatekeeping institutions. In this report, the author will provide a recent history of accreditation policy, make the case for increasing the number of recognized accreditors, and provide a set of guidelines the Department of Education should use in evaluating new accreditors seeking recognition and gatekeeping authority.
