Abstract | As part of a larger research project into the practice and effectiveness of Life Orientation (LO), a compulsory subject in South African schools, this study investigated the views that teachers have regarding the constructs spirituality and religion within the context of LO. LO attempts to teach skills, attitudes and values from a holistic approach to human existence. Even though this approach could provide a platform for including the spiritual aspect of existence, no provision is made nor policy guidelines provided for the inclusion of spirituality in the curriculum. Results indicated that teachers' opinions around spirituality and LO were divergent and strongly felt, with the main differences centering around the form of spirituality, issues surrounding the particularist faith claims of different religious positions and questions of truth. Despite this, most of them favoured the inclusion of spirituality or religion in the subject LO. Considering that many other countries have included spirituality education in their curriculum, this article highlights the need to provide clear policy guidelines that can inform the curriculum and provide a way forward for South African teachers.
