AbstractIn this article, the author comments on two highly cited articles and how they link to wider trends in higher education research. The two papers in question, Angela Brew's article from 2003, "Teaching and research: New relationships and their implications for inquiry-based teaching and learning in higher education" and Gerlese Akerlind's article from 2005, "Variation and commonality in phenomenographic research methods," are from highly respected Australia-based researchers, both with roots and extensive networks outside Australia as well. Needless to say, those roots and networks are almost a prerequisite for a paper to become noted and cited at an early stage in its history. The author notes that each paper pertains to different aspects of higher education research and development and appeals to somewhat different, though overlapping, groups of the research community. She first offers her interpretation of what each paper is about. Following that, she reflects on what she thinks makes them stand out from the crowd of publications, then studies the ways in which some of the citations of each paper were made, attempting to analyze the underlying reasons for the citation. Lastly, she considers the importance of these papers from her particular standpoint. (Contains 1 note.) (ERIC).
