Abstract | This article presents a review of the Children's Measure of Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms (CMOCS), a self-report screening measure of obsessive and compulsive thoughts and behaviors in children and adolescents aged 8 through 19 years. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is estimated to affect 1% to 3% of the population over their lifetime. The CMOCS is a concise, examiner-friendly screening assessment tool. It is brief, consisting of 56 self-reported items. The items are written at a second-grade level, making the scale accessible for even young readers and those with reading difficulties. Administration and scoring are relatively fast and simple, and the overall reliability and validity evidence is promising. The CMOCS manual is well organized, clear, and concise and contains the necessary information for administration, scoring, and interpretation as well as a technical review of the measure. Weaknesses of the CMOCS include the fact that it cannot be used as the sole measure for diagnosis of OCD, lower reliability, and validity indicators for the African American subsample, and the absence of a large clinical OCD subsample for comparative purposes. Although these limitations should be taken into consideration when using the CMOCS, the authors of this review believe that this scale is a promising screening measure for obsessive and compulsive symptoms in children and adolescents. Future research should examine the CMOCS in a larger OCD clinical population and explore cultural differences in obsessive and compulsive symptoms through the comparison of general population and minority subsample norming data.
