Abstract	Over the past several decades, behavioral interventions have produced positive and significant outcomes for children with a wide range of challenging behaviors. Because parents probably have the most information regarding the extent and history of their child's difficulties and the most knowledge of their child's home environment, it is essential for parents to be actively involved in planning and implementing behavioral interventions in order to maximize their effectiveness. In addition, when parents implement interventions consistently, positive outcomes are more likely to be maintained over time and generalized to new settings, situations, and behaviors. Therefore, it is critical for practitioners to encourage parents to take an active role in interventions that will improve their child's challenging behaviors. As a practitioner, understanding the family's strengths and needs is the first step in building rapport with parents. This step is followed by helping parents understand the behavioral approach, working with parents when planning and conducting an intervention, and motivating parents to continue using the intervention consistently. This article provides practitioners with a sequential process and suggestions for teaching parents to help plan and deliver effective interventions to their child. (Contains 3 figures.) (ERIC).
