Abstract | New teachers don't last long in urban schools. From 30% to 50% of them leave these schools within their first five years, and teacher education institutions are trying a number of strategies to change this. To combat the high attrition rate among new teachers in urban schools, the authors suggest that teacher education programs should take a social justice approach that combines six interrelated factors--knowledge base for teaching, knowledge of students as learners, culturally relevant teaching, learning cohorts within learning communities, mentors/teaching models, and school-university-community partnerships--to develop teachers who are focused on the communities they serve and supported by a partnership with the community and their teacher education program.
