AbstractOne of the major purposes of many intercultural communication textbooks is to help students recognize, accept, and appreciate cultural differences. However, one often lacks the necessary motivation to get to know and learn about individuals of a different cultural heritage. Thus, misunderstanding, stereotyping, prejudice, or even racism may pervade one's interpretation of individuals from disparate cultures. This article outlines an activity that attempts to address these concerns through the accomplishment of two main goals: (1) to show how communication, in the context of friendship, can enrich individuals' understanding of various cultures; and (2) to demonstrate how cultural differences can simultaneously enhance and hinder individuals' experience of multi-cultural friendship. While this activity is primarily designed for an intercultural communication class, it can also be used in interpersonal communication classes, given that this activity addresses concepts that can be found in most contemporary interpersonal communication textbooks. These concepts include friendship formation, relational dialectics, and cultural influence. [A list of references and suggested readings is included.] (Contains 1 table.) (ERIC).
