Abstract | This article presents an activity which makes use of Don McLean's song "American Pie," to engage students in fantasy-theme analysis. This discussion ultimately demonstrates how reality is constructed to satisfy the views shared by groups and individuals. Fantasy-theme analysis argues that audiences frequently shape their own connotation of an artifact, and this interpretation may vary from the rhetor's message. Fantasy does not imply make-believe. Rather, it refers to interpretations of events such as films, speeches, and even Internet messages: "Fantasy-themes tell a story that accounts for the group's experience and shapes group members' understanding of what is real." This activity is an excellent gateway to study other methods of rhetorical criticism. It challenges students to identify the rhetorical purpose and to justify their claims. They also learn to evaluate their lines of reasoning, debate their positions, and defend the legitimacy of their observations. (ERIC). |
