Abstract | This essay examines the problem of defining critical thinking and demonstrates how critical thinking is less a determinable process or set of procedures than a constellation of attitudes, habits of mind, role relations, and participation motives. It demonstrates further why college instruction in critical thinking in composition classes--particularly for basic writers--needs to be focused not on a set of discrete skills for thinking but on helping students to take on the roles and identities of persons who are critical thinkers. It then presents and unpacks the paradoxical fact that basic writers among all college students are often the ones who in their courses must, out of necessity, exercise the highest levels of critical thinking. It concludes with two student samples that show students' thinking about their thinking. (Contains 2 figures.) (As Provided). |
