Abstract | This article presents the state education finance and governance profile of Oklahoma. The state uses a State Aid Formula to determine the appropriation of funds to various districts. Along with the aid formula, the state collects revenue from the following sources: compensatory programs, special education, vocational programs, transportation programs, and state payments on behalf of local education agencies. The majority of local funds come from an ad valorem tax, which is not to exceed 15 mills on the dollar for a taxable year. The state of Oklahoma has 1,845 public school sites, 3 of which the state operates. The state has 541 school districts, all of which can levy taxes. The State Board of Education consists of seven members, six of whom the governor appoints, and the Superintendent of Public Instruction elected by the state. The appointed board members serve a 6-year term. (Contains 2 tables.) (ERIC). |
