Abstract | With the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004) and No Child Left Behind legislation (2001), the call for collaboration is omnipresent. A review of the current landscape makes this imperative obvious. With the mandate for inclusion and the necessity for special education teachers to collaborate with their general education peers to meet the needs of a continually increasing number of diverse learners, the authors identified the need for faculty in teacher education programs to demonstrate collaborative practices, such as planning and implementing instruction, for all preservice teachers. With the concept of shared responsibility in mind and the importance of modeling best practices for University of North Florida (UNF) preservice teachers, the authors developed a model for teaching the Introduction to Exceptionalities course. The course was designed not only to deliver the critical and required contents of the course, but also to demonstrate to preservice teachers exciting and effective ways of working together and sharing the responsibility for teaching. This article describes how the authors modeled collaboration in curriculum and pedagogy at the university level. Additionally, they present the benefits derived from this collaboration for both students and faculty. (ERIC). |
