Abstract	Biology instructors from middle school to university level recognize that natural selection is an essential topic in the curriculum. Numerous studies have shown the prevalence of many alternative conceptions about evolution that persist despite instruction in student populations all over the world. Having valid, reliable and easily used assessments is necessary for determining the effectiveness of instructional approaches. The recent article by Nehm and Schonfeld (2008) that compares the Conceptual Inventory of Natural Selection (CINS) with two other assessments finds that CINS is a useful tool for large groups of students, but also points to possible weaknesses of CINS and identifies some problematic issues with the original paper by the authors Anderson, Fisher, and Norman (2002). In this article, the authors respond to the criticisms of CINS construction, to CINS-related research, and finally offer their comment on potential usefulness of CINS with various populations. In summary, Nehm and Schonfeld raise some important issues that required explanation and, in some cases, rebuttal. Their discussion has posed interesting questions for future studies. The authors remain confident that CINS is a useful diagnostic tool for researchers, teachers, and professors. (ERIC).
