Abstract | Wholeness brings to mind the soul/spirit and, quite naturally, a discussion of what constitutes spirituality. In general, the definition of spirituality is associated with an attitude or way of life that may or may not be connected to Christian, Buddhist, Hindi, Jewish, or Muslim religions. Whether the approach to the topic is religious or secular, the need to improve not only one's individual condition but one's community and society is a common theme. Given her awareness of how spirituality affects her daily personal and professional interactions as a woman of color, working in a profession that remains predominantly white, and acknowledging the generally strong religious beliefs of people of color, the author briefly explores her lived experience as a female professor of color guided by faith in a higher power. First, she combines the use of traditional Christian hymns with a set of eclectic journal entries to God in order to reveal how the spirit strengthens her, thereby making her a better person, teacher, researcher, administrator, and academician in general. Second, she more directly discusses the role of prayer and a relationship with God as a foundation in handling the joys and demands of academia. (ERIC). |
