Abstract | Homework is a reality in the lives of most American school children. At its best, homework is a highly useful and appropriate strategy. At its worst, it can wreak havoc in the lives of many children and families who fail to master behavioral and environmental routines that create conditions and patterns conducive for optimal performance. Thus, empirical studies evaluating the efficacy of homework interventions for students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related disabilities are of prime importance for school psychologists and associated professionals. The investigation of the effects of a homework intervention testing the delivery of group contingencies/consequences under varying conditions is useful in efforts to understand efficient means for increasing work completion and accuracy. In addition to examining effects on specific homework behavior, it would have been useful to assess potential mediating conditions that may be operating. Whereas the focus of homework interventions is certainly appropriate for children with ADHD and learning problems, it is hard to decipher the theoretical or ecological frameworks underlying their interventions, and thus capture the fullness of their efforts. Homework interventions focus on structure only, and on means to deliver consequences for completion. Noticeably absent from homework interventions are the individuals responsible for the "home" in "homework"--parents. In this article, the author discusses the significant role of parents in homework interventions and stresses that parents need to be part of an array of contextual interventions targeted at enhancing the learning environments within which children function.
