| Abstract | This article considers the processes within policy and legislation through which the point about inclusion continues to be missed in the search for the calculable and the certain, which Derrida (1990) refers to as "a madness" and this article explores how this has played out in the Scottish context in which there is currently an attempt to replace the existing system of assessing disabled children. The "effects" of these moments of madness are a deferral of responsibilities and an endless repetition of exclusion and the irresistible nature of these effects is explored. The article concludes with a discussion of possibilities for avoiding the repetition of exclusion. These require a leap of imagination, but not faith, and necessitate the engagement with undecidability and the impossible, in an attempt to "draw a line of creation out of a speeding line of annihilation."
