Abstract | The history of Higher Education in the United States during the twentieth century includes many examples of colleges and universities, founded by mainline, protestant denominations, whose identity with and influence from those churches had faded dramatically by the 1960s and 70s. Waynesburg College, founded in 1859 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church (later merged into what is now the Presbyterian Church USA) was one of those examples. But by 2003, Waynesburg College (now Waynesburg University) became a full member of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities. The article that follows is the result of a two-year study, conducted from 2005 to 2007, the purpose of which was to discover the story of this remarkable and quite novel missional transformation.
