| Abstract | The purpose of this article is to examine the life, pedagogical practices, and educational philosophy of Helen Lotspeich, who may be considered the premier practitioner of child-centered Progressive education in Cincinnati, Ohio during the first half of the 20th century. In "A History of The Seven Hills School," Driscoll (1995) concluded that in Cincinnati, Helen Lotspeich "was probably the most lucid and charismatic advocate for the kind of education that was called "progressive" both for its forward-looking qualities and for its deep belief in every individual's inborn drive to learn and to achieve." Philosophically, Driscoll (1995) suggested that "Mrs. Lotspeich's own deeply-held beliefs happened to be in tune with the progressive precepts of John Dewey, and she would, in time, refer to her school as a "progressive school". This study of the educational philosophy and practices of Helen Lotspeich begins with a story about her as a young teacher one wintry day and ends with a story of her death on yet another wintry day.
