AbstractThis study examines how teachers of young children in Denmark perceived challenging behaviours in children who have characteristics consistent with Deficit in Attention, Motor Control and Perception (DAMP) or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This study was conducted in schools and kindergartens in three demographically different locations in Denmark. Teachers and kindergarten educationalists working with children aged 5-7 were interviewed. The semi-structured interview was focused on teachers' and kindergarten educationalists' attitudes towards and ways of working with preschool- and early-elementary school-age children with general challenging behaviours. More specifically, the interview tapped into the teachers' and kindergarten educationalists' knowledge of DAMP/ADHD, their attitudes towards the diagnosis of DAMP/ADHD, and their perceptions of the use of prescribed medications for preschool-age children. The study indicates that Danish kindergarten educationalists and teachers have a quite limited knowledge about DAMP/ADHD and that they are reluctant to refer for diagnosis and to suggest prescribing medicine to young children.
