Abstract | In this article, the authors talk about National Education Association (NEA) leadership's decision to side with corporate reformers rather than with teachers. While the authors agree with the NEA leadership in its argument that the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act "is not working" and is "an unfounded, unfair, and unattainable mandate that largely labels and punishes schools and denies all children their basic right to a great public school," they assert that the NEA leadership needs to be less concerned about allying itself with corporations and more concerned with supporting the teachers it represents. Here, they call on union leaders, members of Congress, and their Business Roundtable allies to do something radical and to listen to the highly qualified teachers who work with children every day. They present a petition calling for the dismantling of NCLB and some comments gleaned from those who have signed to the petition. (Contains 13 endnotes.) (ERIC). |
