AbstractThis article presents an interview with Katrina Bledsoe, a senior research associate with Planning, Research & Evaluation Services (PRES) Associates in Washington, D.C. Dr. Bledsoe was a faculty member in the Psychology Department at The College of New Jersey. She was trained under Stewart Donaldson at Claremont Graduate University (CGU) and helped design and coordinate CGU's Master's Program in Evaluation. Although she represents a new generation of evaluators, she already has 12 years of experience evaluating community-based education programs, including drug and crime-prevention efforts for communities of color, and health and education programs. Dr. Bledsoe is the author of articles featured in journals such as "American Journal of Evaluation" and has work forthcoming in "Handbook of Ethics for Research in the Social Sciences" and "International Handbook of Urban Education." The article begins with a brief description of the evaluation of the Fun with Books (FWB) program at the Children's Home Society of New Jersey (CHS) to provide a foundation for the interview. In the interview, Dr. Bledsoe describes her efforts to learn about Trenton and how its history and culture influence the characteristics of the clients served. Furthermore, she talks about her own views of cultural competence. This interview offers readers insight into the challenges and rewards of conducting community-based, grassroots program evaluation.
