Abstract | Sampling without replacement is an important aspect in teaching conditional probabilities in elementary statistics courses. Different methods proposed in different texts for calculating probabilities of events in this context are reviewed and their relative merits and limitations in applications are pinpointed. An alternative representation of hypergeometric distribution resembling binomial distribution may provide more insight into the problems often encountered. (Author). |
