Abstract | Each year for the past 25 years, the Center for Gifted Education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock conducts a three-week summer enrichment program for gifted and talented students entitled Summer Laureate/University for Youth. The program was developed to provide a practicum experience for teachers seeking either licensure or a master's degree in gifted education while also providing enrichment experiences for gifted students. The program serves approximately 350 children from central Arkansas. They range from five to 13 years of age and participate in two different classes. Thus, each teacher has two groups of children, with approximately 15 in each class. With the move to performance-based teacher preparation programs, the need to document knowledge, skills, and dispositions is increasing in importance through the field experience. This article describes a more comprehensive assessment format for evaluating practicum teachers. Three different scoring rubrics were developed to strengthen the reliability of the assessment in areas for which practicum teachers are held responsible. These rubrics have been used for three summers and are continually being evaluated and revised. (Contains 1 figure.) (ERIC). |
