AbstractThis paper focuses on conservative women and education in the 1930s. Conservative women were particularly concerned, if not contentious, about the alleged state of affairs in the schools. Their ideas about education and their imperative, as they saw it, to preserve a patriotic heritage and to agitate against perceived threats to that heritage are the subjects of this paper. It contributes to the growing narrative of conservative women in the interwar years by focusing on this important yet understudied element of conservative women's beliefs and activism. This paper argues that women's spirited involvement indicated not just a natural desire to oversee their children's education, it also revealed their heightened interest in the much broader theme of national defense. National defense, to the conservative women who constructed this vision, demanded a powerful military and, just as important, the safeguarding of America's cherished institutions from internal subversion. As they developed strategies to encourage patriotic education in the schools and eliminate unacceptable teachers and materials, conservative women expressed with utter certainty that their way, and only their way provided the proper tools and guidance that children needed in the schools to fulfill America's promise. That certainty, as well as questions about the content of the curriculum, the quality of education for children from different socioeconomic backgrounds, and the extent of federal authority continue to inform discussions regarding the public schools.
