| Abstract | Gerald Bracey has been dismayed at the uncritical acceptance of international comparisons in this country. It seems to him that otherwise competent researchers and psychometricians abandon all critical facilities when dealing with data from the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement--the TIMSS studies and PIRLS--or the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OCED)--PISA. Technically put, they go gaga. Clearly, there is political pressure to accept these studies, but Bracey also sees them as a small growth industry on which a number of careers depend. He believes PISA has received substantial criticism for its techniques using Item Response Theory to generate the scales found in the reports. American educators should treat PISA skeptically, and wishes the U.S. Department of Education and educational researchers would display similar doubts. (ERIC). |
