Abstract | This article is concerned with those literacy (language) practices the examinations require to be rehearsed as evidence of successful literacy in three sites, namely Afrikaans, English and Zulu Matriculation examinations in KwaZulu-Natal in November 1990. It presents a contrastive analysis of aspects of the Afrikaans, English and Zulu examinations at matriculation levels, in particular the different 'worlds' or imaginary repertoires inscribed into the different language papers. The analysis suggests that the literacy practices of each of the three languages propose and validate particular subjectivities and competences and that different groups of learners are educated to different purposes and this along the lines of race and language.
