Abstract | The author's reflection on her experiences as a young African American in school and as a junior high teacher reveal concerns that African-American youth continue to face such obstacles as low self-esteem, lack of cultural validation, poor motivation, and lack of self-confidence. Significant improvements in teacher awareness and advocacy of African-American culture are needed. (SK) |
