Abstract | The article presents the results of a large-scale Polish project aimed at examining the quality of early childhood education and care using the SACERS research tool. Although the SACERS scale consists of 47 items, this article focuses mainly on the data concerning the assessment of space and furnishings of 140 school common rooms in terms of the first subscale: 'Space and Furnishings'. According to the SACERS, the results prove that the quality of space and furnishings in Polish school common rooms for 5-9-year-old children is inadequate. An in-depth study of one area shows that the child's need for privacy and the need to create and mark space are not satisfied. The furnishings for gross motor activities and the access to host facilities (e.g. a sports field, school library, canteen) are better. The research results show that the philosophy of organising space in the SACERS differs from the school reality. This article aims to help educational authorities, schools, and other subjects to maximise the use of educational environments. A multifaceted study conducted on a large sample provides empirical evidence in favour of the concern for the quality of school common rooms. (As Provided). |
