Abstract | Using geographic information systems (GIS), spatial data, and web mapping tools to enrich teaching and learning in geography courses is an effective way to integrate critical thinking and spatial analysis into the classroom (or virtual classroom). This lesson describes mapping song lyrics through ArcGIS Online. It explores how students analyze and visualize song lyrics in a GIS. While the use of music is secondary compared to the larger objective of proceeding with a GIS exercise, the relevance of music as a pedagogical tool should still be discussed. The lesson described in this article, while admittedly putting music secondary to GIS, is meant to provide an educational resource for teachers interested in implementing a music-themed geography lesson into their courses.
