Abstract | The study of communication through the framework of established theories is central to communication education, and most undergraduate communication programs include a course dedicated to surveying theoretical perspectives. This activity guides students to review and synthesize theoretical knowledge in a March Madness-style end-of-semester competition. The purpose is threefold. First, students revisit theories covered over the semester, providing a valuable review opportunity. Second, students gain experience evaluating strengths and weaknesses of individual theories in comparison with others. Third, by considering theories in competition, students engage with broader metatheoretical questions in the study of communication. Courses: Communication Theory, Advanced Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Communication Theory. Objectives: The purpose of this end-of-semester activity is to demonstrate (1) students' ability to compare and contrast communication theories, (2) students' competency in evaluating communication theories, and (3) students' proficiency in discussing broader theoretical issues in the study of communication.
