AbstractIn this study, the authors set out to explore the short-term, faculty-led geography study abroad opportunities offered by institutions of higher education in the United States, whether they are offered with a partnering discipline, and how easy (or difficult) it is for undergraduate students to find information about them. Using the 2018-2019 "Guide to Geography Programs in the Americas," five undergraduate geography students were instructed to search for short-term, faculty-led geography study abroad opportunities and to exclude semester and year abroad opportunities or those offered by partner institutions without faculty from the home institution. For each opportunity found, students recorded the home institution, topic and description of the study abroad, location abroad, and the partnering discipline(s), if any. The data were subsequently validated by two supervising faculty members, who reviewed the opportunities found by students to ensure that they fit the search criteria (i.e., geography, short-term, faculty-led). The students identified 171 study abroad opportunities across 90 of the 213 schools listed in the guide. As evidenced by the supervising faculty's data validation, which removed 75% of the student-found offerings, undergraduate geography students may have difficulty finding and identifying relevant study abroad opportunities.
