Abstract | In the field of dance, barriers still exist in the form of long held Eurocentric traditions that discourage the inclusion of individuals from diverse communities. Classical ballet technique, although not the origin of dance for many cultures (Mabingo 2019), often remains the determining criteria for academic and professional dance pursuits. For many dancers from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups who have access to consistent ballet training, there is often an unspoken personal price to pay. For dancers of color, assimilation to Eurocentric requisites of body type, dress code, and casting can take a heavy toll on self-esteem and psychological well-being. Whether subtle or blatant, ballet academies and companies across the United States continue to transmit harmful messages that convey a lesser membership for dancers of color. Social and political pressures now urge ballet academies with company affiliations, as well as dance departments in higher education, to increase diversity in enrollment and participation. Efforts beyond cultural knowledge and understanding must be made by weaving "cultural humility" into the fabric of these institutions. This article explores this cultural humility as well as elitist and exclusionary practices of classical ballet institutions, present day outreach programs for underrepresented students, the intersection of culture and social climate, and implications for the current culture climate in ballet.
