| Abstract | Challenges to identity formation often emerge during college experiences as one's world view is confronted by exposure to new social circles, ideas, and cultures. Through the analysis of interpenetrating identities in the popular television show, "The Big Bang Theory," students are able to locate concrete examples of the four frames of Jung and Hecht's communication theory of identity and related identity gaps. Students are then provided the opportunity to reflect on identity inconsistencies in their own identity management, the effects on communication outcomes, and how to improve communication outcomes across identity gaps. Courses: Interpersonal Communication, Media and Culture, and courses in relational communication or family dynamics. Objectives: By completing this activity, students should be able to: (1) explain the concept of identity gaps and the four frames in the communication theory of identity; (2) locate examples of those frames/gaps in a mediated example of an interaction; and (3) critically think about the way identity gaps may influence communication outcomes.
